the china (shenzhen)—cuba (havana) investment promotion conference was held in havana, cuba, on september 5, to promote the biology and life health industries. mr. gutierrez, chairman of biocubafarma, mr. martinez, vice chairman of biocubafarma, dr. valdes, an academic at the cuban academy of sciences and the academy of latinity, as well as 100 representatives from local biomedical companies and research institutions attended the conference.
firstly, invest shenzhen introduced shenzhen and spoke about recent collaborative efforts with havana on biomedicine. in line with the shenzhen government's move to classify biology and life health industries as emerging strategic and future industries in 2011, the city has rolled out a series of supportive policies in 2016 to introduce premium talent, promote industrial development and improve corporate competitiveness so as to attract overseas talent and introduce foreign technologies. these policies provide new opportunities for cooperation on biomedicine as well as a platform and market for technology incubation and the industrialization of cuba's biomedicine sector in china. a representative from nanshan district in shenzhen, introduced the area's industrial development, regional planning and outstanding industries. mr. gutierrez followed with a speech extending a warm welcome to the delegation from shenzhen and talked about how biocubafarma, one of the largest state-owned groups in cuba, has jointly set up biomedical companies in beijing and changchun since beginning its cooperation with china on biomedicine technologies in the 1980s. established together with biotech pharma co. ltd., biocubafarma is a joint china-cuba company with annual sales of rmb 1 billion. mr. gutierrez also mentioned that biocubafarma and shenzhen have entered into a strategic cooperation framework agreement and set up a group to promote biotechnologies in the two countries, signaling that shenzhen and cuba are set to see even faster development in their technical cooperation on biomedicine.
the conference was the first campaign by invest shenzhen to promote investment and exchanges with cuba. the success of the event shows that shenzhen and havana have entered a new stage in technical cooperation and exchange.
