the purpose of the trip was to implement the "one belt, one road" strategy of the chinese government, turn the city into the vanguard for building the 21st-century maritime silk road, strengthen friendly ties with other cities and expand the overseas investment promotion network. invest shenzhen formed a delegation with relevant district government departments of dapeng and bao'an, under the deployment of the municipal government. the delegation went to greece may 18-19 and carried out a series of fruitful investment promotion activities. the activities included holding exchange meetings for investment cooperation, visiting dignitaries in the political and commercial communities, negotiating project cooperation and staging workshops.
on the afternoon of may 18, invest shenzhen staged an exchange meeting for investment cooperation themed "investing in shenzhen for a win-win future" in athens. it was the first time invest shenzhen had ever expanded a new investment promotion market in greece. timoleo kopsachilis, a member of the greek parliament, alexandros samaras, president of the greek association of architectural design, and menelaos stephanides, chairman of the greece-china economic, commercial and cultural exchange association, and other guests, attended and addressed the meeting. also present at the meeting were around 50 representatives of enterprise and institutions from major greek industries including logistics, commerce and trade, culture and creative, shipping equipment manufacturing and alternative energy. the atmosphere of the meeting was very lively.
timoleo kopsachilis, alexandros samaras and menelaos stephanides each made a speech, reviewing the history of friendship and deep relations between the two cities and two countries, while looking forward to the bright future of bilateral cooperation. invest shenzhen introduced the business environment of shenzhen in terms of innovation, ecology, culture, economy, services and transportation. it was proposed that both sides could carry out comprehensive cooperation in economy, trade and technology, participate in the construction of the "one belt,one road", and facilitate cooperation in the areas of alternative energy, culture and creativity. then the bao'an and dapeng districts briefed the attendees about how their local industries fit well with greece and the related industry policies, and also shared relevant information.
at the meeting, invest shenzhen signed a cooperation memo with the greece-china economic, commercial and cultural exchange association, and decided to carry out deeper cooperation in enterprise investment, information sharing and staging activities. this also marked the fact that invest shenzhen had preliminarily established a cooperative overseas investment promotion network in greece. the event drew extensive lot of attention from the news media, and was covered and reported onsite by renowned local journalists including those from kathimerini and the china greece times.
shenzhen’s favorable investment environment and the efficient and pragmatic work style of invest shenzhen generated strong responses among the greek enterprises present at the meeting. they competed to speak and expressed the hope to strengthen investment and technological cooperation with shenzhen. after the meeting, about 15 corporate and institutional representatives stayed at the meeting venue and spoke with the delegation for over an hour discussing the possibility of conducting investment cooperation with shenzhen-based enterprises and the means of realizing the plan.
during the visit, invest shenzhen also had meetings with greek government departments (including invest in greece) and the senior officials of a number of institutions, including the greece-china economic, commercial and cultural exchange association, the china council for the promotion of peaceful national unification (greece), larson llp, and dionysus group. invest shenzhen introduced shenzhen’s socioeconomic development condition, investment environment and relevant preferential policies.
in recent years, bilateral economic and trade activities have developed robustly, with frequent mutual visits between the top government officials of both countries. in july 2014, president xi jinping made a stopover visit to greece; while in june of the same year, premier li keqiang paid a formal visit to the country. the top officials of both governments reached a major consensus on promoting the construction of the “silk road economic belt” and the "21st-century maritime silk road".
athens is the scientific research, cultural and industrial center of greece and a portal to the european union, and they signed a friendly cooperation memorandum with shenzhen in november 2013, opening a new chapter for bilateral cooperation. in march 2014, a government economic and trade delegation led by fotis provatas, chairman of the athens city council, visited shenzhen and attended the opening ceremony of shenzhen-athens enterprise fair. bilateral relations in the areas of economy, trade and culture showed vast and promising prospects.
