a total of 31 projects and items from shenzhen won science and technology awards at the guangdong innovation development conference that was held in guangzhou yesterday.
the projects cover many sectors including electronic information, advanced manufacturing, new energy and civil engineering.
nine projects in electronic information and seven projects in advanced manufacturing won prizes.
the 8.5th generation super film transistor lcd industrialization project by shenzhen china star optoelectronics technology co. won the first prize, marking the first time in six years that shenzhen has won the title in the category of key engineering project.
another project, the high-end blood cell analysis system developed by shenzhen mindray bio-medical electronics co., also won the first prize. the health industry project broke the monopoly of foreign manufacturers in hemanalysis and reduces the cost of medical treatment. it forced overseas suppliers to cut prices by 50 percent in order to enter the chinese market.
with the technology, mindray became the only new world-supplier on the list in the past 20 years. the technology had previously been monopolized by beckman coulter and abbott companies in the u.s., and siemens in germany.
among the winning projects, 21 of them, or 68 percent of the total, were developed by enterprises.
at the awards ceremony, wu shuoxian and liu yizhi won prizes for their outstanding contributions to guangdong's science and technology development.
wu is the only academic at the chinese academy of sciences (cas) in the field of architecture acoustics. a professor with south china university of technology, wu was elected as an academic at cas in 2005.
wu specializes in architecture and environmental acoustics. he has put forward a theory and methods about the prediction, simulation and planning of urban traffic noise. he is the first to analyze room acoustics by linking architecture assistant design software and acoustics software. together with his co-workers, wu has proposed the new calculating model, simulation of diffuse sound field, and has developed an environmental evaluation system.
wu has been in charge of the acoustic design of more than 55 architecture projects, published 82 academic papers and seven works. his masterpiece "room acoustics and environmental acoustics" is considered the research monograph by national natural science funding.
professor liu yizhi, head of zhongshan ophthalmic center of sun yat-sen university, is a well-known expert in minimally invasive cataract surgery.
a collaborative international team led by liu made the remarkable achievement of lens regeneration by using endogenous stem cells to gain visual function. the achievement was rated as the most exciting discovery in regenerative medicine in the world in 2016 by nature medicine.
this represents the only "notable advance" research led by a chinese scientist since the first review of notable advances in the field of life sciences by nature medicine in 2010.
