shenzhen-based companies won four gold patent awards at the 17th wipo-sipo award hosted by the state intellectual property office (sipo) and the world intellectual property organization (wipo) on tuesday, the shenzhen economic daily reported yesterday.
the award honors patented chinese inventions and industrial design, and four out of 20 gold patent awards were given to shenzhen companies this year. shenzhen companies also won 42 patent excellence awards and six design excellence awards.
shenzhen companies have won 23 gold patent awards since 2003, with the first one being won by the shenzhen-based telecom equipment company zte. another 146 patent excellence awards, 24 design excellence awards and two gold design awards have been given to companies in shenzhen over the past decade.
according to the daily report, half of china's international patent applications came from shenzhen.
over 23,000 patents for computer software were registered in shenzhen, making up 10.5 percent of the total registered in china.
from january to october this year, shenzhen witnessed 32,027 patent applications, with a yearly growth of 33.5 percent. there were 13,795 invention patents awarded, 43.1 percent higher than the same period last year.
the city's invention patents reached 80,000, with an annual growth of 17.4 percent. the number of international patent applications passed 10,000, 18.7 percent higher than the same period last year.
since the reform of the commercial registration system was launched in shenzhen in 2013, the city's commercial registrations have soared from less than 1 million to more than 2 million over the past two years, outpacing other cities in china.
meanwhile, the shenzhen municipal government has introduced favorable policies and financial support to help boost the growth of local makers.
