shenzhen university was in 18th place on a recent report that ranked chinese universities based on the number of their alumni on the hurun rich list, an annual ranking of the richest individuals in china, according to sznews.com.
the hurun rich list alumni report, released by the hurun research institute on friday, revealed that zhejiang university topped the list, having 38 alumni on the hurun rich list, followed by beijing university, tsinghua university, renmin university of china and fudan university.
shenzhen university was ranked 18th with six alumni on the hurun rich list. "the most innovative cities are also the home of elite universities, like stanford university in silicon valley," said rupert hoogewerf, chairman of the institute.
hoogewerf said that it's interesting that shenzhen — the city of makers — ranked second regarding the number of shenzheners on the hurun rich list, which beijing topped, but only shenzhen university, where pony ma of tencent graduated from, made it into the hurun rich list alumni report.
beijing, with 13 universities on the hurun rich list alumni report, has the most, followed by shanghai with 7, nanjing with 5 and guangzhou with 4.
the front runners on the hurun rich list, however, are not necessarily from the elite universities.
wang jianlin, founder and chairman of wanda group, topped the list this year, but he graduated from liaoning university, which was in 33rd place in the alumni report. the second richest person on the list, jack ma, graduated from hangzhou normal university, which wasn't even shortlisted in the alumni report.
all of the alumni in the report are super-rich individuals, with personal assets of at least 2 billion yuan (us$294 million), but half of the 2,000 entrepreneurs on the list this year don't have a bachelor's degree.
