shenzhen university (szu) announced that it has received 1 billion yuan (us$157.6 million) from the municipal government in a bid to become a top chinese university within the next three years.
the next three years will be a key stage for the university to develop itself academically and build its campus. the university aims to enter the top 50 list of the national natural science foundation of china and the national social science fund. it also wants to boost its presence on the science citation index, putting it into the top 70 in china in terms of comprehensive competitiveness.
recent years have seen shenzhen university rise to fourth in guangdong province.
a video released oct. 16 sets out construction plans for the university from 2015 to 2017. shenzhen university intends to recruit over 20 national academics and 45 high-level talents with national awards in the next three years. it also plans to bring more than 400 young teachers onto its faculty.
working with the city's cutting-edge technology companies including tencent, huawei and dji, shenzhen university also plans to establish over eight research centers. the university expects more than 200 patents each year with 15 percent of the patents being used, generating 5 billion yuan for related industries.
the university hopes to raise the admission threshold and plans to become rated third in guangdong. the university will take over 8,000 postgraduates and guarantee an employment rate of over 90 percent.
apart from supporting shenzhen university, the municipal government is also planning to construct two other jointly built universities and campuses, the sun yat-sen university-shenzhen campus and the university of applied technology. the two universities will be key projects for the city, according to guo yurong, head of the city's education bureau.
the vice president of sun yat-sen university, li mengfeng, said earlier this year that the university is planning to build a campus in shenzhen and the development and construction of the shenzhen campus will keep the same standards as the other guangzhou campuses.
