a survey released tuesday rated shenzhen the second most inclusive city in china, after guangzhou. the guangzhou-based sun yat-sen university's (sysu) survey placed chongqing in third place, shenzhen special zone daily reported yesterday.
the survey was conducted by the kcis kaidi data research center of the nanfang media group and the lab for big data and communication at sysu. it mainly looked at seven cities in china with a population of more than 10 million: guangzhou, shenzhen, beijing, shanghai, chongqing, tianjin and wuhan.
according to the report, the survey set four variables to measure the overall level of urban identification. they are cultural identification, personal identification, status identification and regional identification.
the survey found those born after the 21st century had the highest urban identification level. the report said it may be because these groups of young people are still not adults and have not entered society.
those born between 1970 and 1980 are reported to have the second-highest identification level, with those born between 1960 and 1970 holding the lowest level.
those with a master's degree and above show a lower identification level than those holding a college degree and lower diplomas. yang yiyin, the research person in charge of the chinese academy of social sciences, said the relatively low identification level among citizens with higher degrees is a result of the disparity between their self-expectation and reality.
"urban identification is the most important yardstick to evaluate a city," said zhang zhi'an, dean of sysu school of communication and design.
