the fabrication laboratory (fablab) experience exhibition, an event at shenzhen’s makers’ week, officially launched thursday in the shenzhen industrial exhibition hall, showcasing innovative designs from 62 maker agencies from china and abroad.
the five-day exhibition being held in the shenzhen civic center features inventions that anyone can try.
visitors to the exhibition hall will have a chance to operate a robotic arm that was made by a 14-year-old maker from taiwan china. music fans will also get a chance to try out drumpants, a wearable music instrument.
exhibition goers will also get a chance to try uv-proof night vision goggles.
maker agencies including biocurious from the u.s., misfit from japan and runway incubator from the u.s. will also showcase their designs.
on display are intelligent bracelets, which can change color by adapting to the light, and intelligent shoes with gps navigation functions.
at the launch ceremony, mit professor neil gershenfeld, the founder of fablab, announced that the fab12 global conference will be held in shenzhen in 2016.
“fablab is a low-cost lab that lets people build things they need using digital and analog tools. it’s a simple idea with powerful results,” said neil gershenfeld, who is planning to set up a fablab base in shenzhen.
shenzhen officially started makers’ week on thursday with a variety of activities such as contests, forums and exhibitions of innovative designs to be held at its main venue, shenzhen software industrial park, and subvenues across the city.
at a maker contest thursday, 42 maker teams from 10 countries showed off inventions such as a finger-scanning car lock and a wireless projector.
judges were comprised of investors and market analysts. the winning teams stood to get funds totaling 7 million yuan (us$1.15 million) to start up their businesses.
“the maker contest is a stage for global makers to demonstrate their talent and a platform for them to start their careers,” said wang hongwei, director with nanshan science and innovation service center.
