walmart, a u.s.-based multinational retail giant, plans to double the number of its stores in shenzhen in the next three to five years, said ceo and president of walmart china, sean clarke, during a meeting with shenzhen mayor xu qin on tuesday.
clarke was named president and ceo of walmart china earlier this year and took the position june 1.
walmart currently has 24 retail stores and two sam’s clubs in shenzhen. two new stores are ready to open in buji and henggang subdistricts, longgang district, clarke said.
the company has eyed seven locations in the city to open new outlets and it hopes to establish two sam's clubs in longhua new area and qianhai, a pilot financial zone bordering hong kong.
in 2012, walmart purchased a majority stake in yihaodian, a chinese online retail store. clarke said the company will start to expand its e-business in shenzhen at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
xu said he hopes walmart will take the lead in ensuring food safety and providing high-quality food to shenzhen residents.
clarke said his company practices a strict system of internal inspection on food quality and has a standard purchasing mechanism.
walmart china announced in june that it will triple its food safety investment to more than 300 million yuan (us$49 million) by next year.
walmart's annual sales increased by 24.5 percent last year in china and the company was among the top three retailers in the country, according to a recent industry report.
