five scientists, two from shenzhen, were presented with the tan kah-kee youth science award on wednesday in beijing, the daily sunshine reported.
initiated in 2010 and named after the well-known chinese businessman and community leader tan kah-kee, the biennial award is designed to reward scientists under the age of 40 who have made breakthroughs in the areas of mathematics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences, information technology and technological sciences.
wang jun, director of beijing genomics institute (bgi), won the life science award for his team's research on the human intestinal metagenome. zheng hairong, a researcher with shenzhen institute of advanced technology, chinese academy of sciences, won the technological science award for developing a method to calculate acoustic radiation forces in complex acoustic environments.
"the award is an acknowledgement and encouragement for my team and i at bgi," said the 38-year-old wang.
he said shenzhen is an innovation-based city that gives opportunities and encouragement to young entrepreneurs.
zheng, 37, said that compared with beijing and shanghai, the academic atmosphere in shenzhen is less confined, more active and open. however, the city's sources for research are few, he said.
six projects and five scientists are selected once every two years for the award. each awarded project gets a prize of 500,000 yuan (us$81,300) and each scientist gets a prize of 200,000 yuan.
