shenzhen's energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (us$1,639) of gdp was 0.428 tons of standard coals last year, declining about 5 percent from 0.451 tons of standard coals in 2012, according to the guangdong statistics bureau.
this decrease means shenzhen has achieved a target set by guangdong province that the city's energy consumption per 10,000 yuan should decrease by 4.25 percent each year between 2010 and 2015, according to yesterday's report by shenzhen economic daily.
the city is required to lower its energy consumption to 0.398 tons of standard coals by 2015.
shenzhen's energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of gdp was the second to lowest among domestic metropolises last year, one place above beijing, which last year consumed 0.425 tons of standard coals for each 10,000 yuan of gdp.
shenzhen was proceeded by guangzhou, shanghai and suzhou, according to the paper.
the paper attributed the decline in shenzhen's energy consumption to the city's comparatively stronger energy-saving policies, financial support and an energy-saving mechanism involving joint efforts by city and district governments.
shenzhen subsidized a total of 182 energy-saving and emission-reduction projects by the end of last year with 720 million yuan, inviting social capital investment totaling about 6 billion yuan.
in addition, shenzhen is home to china's first carbon emissions exchange, which opened in june of last year.
the exchange has drawn 635 enterprises so far, and as of april more than 270,000 tons of emissions had been traded, according to the paper.
shenzhen has been pushing forward energy-saving policies in five sectors: industry, construction, transport, public institutions and commerce.
shenzhen issued china's first rules promoting energy-saving buildings. in regards to integrating alternative-energy vehicles into public transport, shenzhen is leading the world. by the end of last year the city was home to 6,363 alternative-energy vehicles, the largest number of new-energy vehicles used for public transport by any city in the world.
