shenzhen will formally accredit 180 high-level talents --- including expats, overseas chinese and returned chinese professionals --- this year under its ambitious peacock plan.
overseas talents brought into shenzhen under the peacock plan, which was initiated in 2011, can get subsidies totaling 800,000 yuan (us$130,717) to 1.5 million yuan along with preferential treatment in areas including visas, housing, children's education, spousal employment and medical insurance.
the policies give priority to professionals working in key and emerging industries such as high-tech, logistics, internet development, biology and new materials, along with public service sectors such as education, public health and sports.
"since the launch of the program, around 60 foreign experts, including chinese with foreign nationalities, have been accepted into the program," lin peijun of the shenzhen administration of foreign experts affairs said yesterday.
jeffrey s. lehman, then chancellor and founding dean of peking university's school of transnational law, and richard jackson, then president of shenzhen development bank, received accreditations from the city government in 2011. each received a housing subsidy of 1.5 million yuan (us$240,000).
jackson and lehman have both won china friendship awards, the country's highest award for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to china's economic or social progress.
in 2013, the city granted accreditations to 270 overseas professionals.
there are about 3,000 foreign experts and about 17,400 foreigners working in shenzhen, according to the foreign experts affairs administration.
