shenzhen is home to 27 of the world's richest people, according to the 2014 global rich list published by hurun report on tuesday.

pony ma, aka ma huateng, the 43-year-old ceo of shenzhen-based tencent, ranks 70th on the global list and was named the eighth-richest man in china with an estimated worth of 84 billion yuan (us$13.7 billion), the southern metropolis daily reported.

hurun's 2014 global rich list ranked 1,867 billionaires from 68 countries.
bill gates, 59, regained his position as the richest man on the planet with wealth totaling 410 billion yuan, an increase of 70 billion yuan from 2013 that enabled him to overtake mexican carlos slim for the first time in three years, hurun said.

warren buffett, 84, and zara founder amancio ortega, 78, were second and third for the second year running, with 380 billion yuan and 370 billion yuan in wealth, respectively.

the total wealth of the 1,867 billionaires amounted to a staggering us$6.9 trillion, more than the gdp of japan, the third-largest global economy, the report said.

the average age of people on the list is 64, one year older than last year's average. one in nine is female, compared with one in 10 last year. over half of the list's self-made women are chinese.

the united states and china have the most people worth more than 10 billion dollars, making up half of the hurun list.

real estate and manufacturing remain the top-grossing sectors, accounting for 26 and 21 percent of the wealth on the list, respectively, followed by finance and investment at 14 percent.

hong kong property tycoon li kai-shing claimed the top spot in china with his fortune rising 3 percent to 200 billion yuan (us$32.80 billion).

real estate tycoon wang jianlin, 60, of wanda group, ranks second in china and 26th globally after doubling his wealth to 150 billion yuan.

lei jun, the 45-year-old ceo of mobile internet company xiaomi, made his debut on the list with a worth of 28 billion yuan, ranking 339th globally.

hong kong tops beijing, taipei, shenzhen and shanghai with the most people on the list-65 -among chinese cities. guangdong province is home to 58 people on the list, most among chinese provinces, followed by zhejiang with 51.
