shenzhen port ranked third in the world in terms of container handling capacity in 2013, shenzhen special zone daily reported thursday.

the city's ports, which are collectively known as shenzhen port, handled containers totaling more than 23.28 million teus (20-foot-equivalent units) last year. the ranking was compiled by chineseport.cn.

shenzhen port has been actively exploring business with inland cities including chong-qing, kunming, changsha and nanchang. in addition, many goods from southeast asia are shipped to north america and south africa through shenzhen.

shenzhen port followed ports in shanghai and singapore in the ranking. ports in hong kong; busan, south korea; and ningbo in zhejiang province followed shenzhen.

china is home to seven of the leading 10 container ports in the world.

the top 10 ports in the world handled containers totaling more than 2 trillion teus last year, a 3.1-percent growth from 2012, the paper said.

only four ports in the world have a container handling capacity of more than 20 million teus per day.

shenzhen had ranked fourth in the world for the 10 years before last year.
