shenzhen ranked fifth among the 10 most attractive chinese cities for expats in survey results released yesterday at the conference on international exchange of professionals, which ends today at shenzhen convention and exhibition center in futian district.
the survey, 2013 amazing china-the most attractive chinese cities for foreigners," compiled foreigners'votes and ranked shanghai, beijing and tianjin as the top three. guangzhou ranked fourth. shenzhen's ranking is two places lower than its ranking last year.
the survey collected opinions on four major indicators: policy environment, political environment, working environment and living environment. shenzhen ranked third in policy environment and political environment, fourth in working environment and eighth in living environment.
shenzhen ranked low in living environment because it got low scores in educational environment for expat children and spirit of inclusiveness.
shenzhen scored much higher in categories including protection of foreigners'rights and interests, quality of government officials, promotion opportunities and salary.
"shenzhen is comfortable for living and is an important high-tech research and development base in china, and the education here reaches the international level," said daniel cohen-or, a prominent scholar in computer graphics who works in shenzhen and won the 2012 china government friendship award.
shanghai has ranked first and beijing second for two years in a row. both cities got higher scores than their overall averages in categories including international atmosphere, cultural diversity, salary and stipends, rights protection, children's education environment and health and medical environment. but problems such as air pollution and traffic jams weakened the cities'attractiveness.
more than 72,000 expats voted in the survey in july and august, including 1,663 signed votes from foreign experts. judges included chinese friendship award recipients and experts involved in the "plan for the recruitment of high-end foreign experts."
international talent magazine has invited foreign experts to evaluate chinese cities since 2010, primarily in categories including working conditions, living environment, policy environment and public service environment. the magazine selects its 10 most attractive chinese cities for expats annually.
