foreign participants said they hoped to find new clients or partners at the eighth china (shenzhen) international logistics and transportation fair, which opened yesterday at shenzhen convention and exhibition center in futian district.
the biggest fair of its kind in asia, the event has drawn more than 1,200 enterprises and institutions from more than 30 countries and regions. more than 80,000 professional visitors and purchasers are expected to attend the fair.
"we are looking for new clients at a big exhibition like this," alexander baskakov, head of the container services department for russian railways logistics, told shenzhen daily yesterday.
baskakov said the fair is a good way to look for new clients and potential cooperation. his company has a branch in chongqing in southwestern china. he said if they find substantial business volume in shenzhen, the company could open a branch here, as well.
david chasdi, senior logistics manager for germany trade & invest, said his organization hopes to help foreign companies, particularly from china, set up physical operations in germany.
"europe is the second-largest market for china and germany is the largest european market for china.... chinese cities like shenzhen and hong kong could be an important gateway to europe and germany,"chasdi said.
chasdi added that the fair makes people aware of opportunities in europe and elsewhere.
"it makes logistics closer," said chasdi, meaning the event brings industry players closer together. his organization has an office in beijing and will soon open a new one in shanghai.
the fair continues through tomorrow. in addition to the exhibition, it includes more than 10 forums on topics such as urban public transit, maritime transportation, supply chain development and logistics equipment.
many foreign participants agreed that shenzhen has been favored by foreign logistics enterprises thanks to its proximity to hong kong, large number of manufacturers and well-developed support facilities.
the added value of the city's logistics industry exceeded 53.6 billion yuan (us$8.73 billion) in the first half of this year, accounting for 8.92 percent of the city's gdp in the same period, according to the city's transportation commission.
shenzhen has the second-largest logistics industry among its domestic counterparts, following shanghai. shenzhen is home to more than 14,800 logistics companies. about 80 percent of china's supply chain enterprises have established their headquarters in shenzhen.
