overseas professionals may play important roles in international arbitration in qianhai as the special zone is working to create an independent and open legal platform to help settle international disputes, a symposium was told tuesday.

the qianhai authority made room in its temporary office building for the shenzhen court of international arbitration (scia) to set up a court in qianhai in 2012, exploring better ways to provide international arbitration services in the zone, said liu xiaochun, scia vice chairman.

"according to the law, at least one-third of the council members and arbitrators of the qianhai court should come from overseas. they're playing important roles in helping the court operate according to international practice," said xiao huanghe, an scia director.

an increasing number of foreign companies or institutions have agreed to resolve disputes on the chinese mainland in projects in which chinese enterprises invested overseas. but foreign parties and even some domestic parties are still cautious about arbitration on the mainland because of concerns about the independence and openness of arbitration courts, liu said.
