the seventh affiliated hospital of sun yat-sen university will be built in the zhenmei community in guangming new area, according to an agreement signed by the shenzhen mayor and the university's president tuesday, the shenzhen economic daily reported yesterday.
shenzhen mayor xu qin and sun yat-sen university's president luo jun signed the agreement to build the university's seventh affiliated hospital in shenzhen. the hospital will offer 800 beds when it comes into operation in june next year after the first phase of construction is completed. by 2020, 4,000 beds and auxiliary facilities will be available, according to the agreement.
the hospital will become the city's largest hospital upon completion, with the most specialty departments and the most advanced medical technologies. it will be able to receive more patients than any other hospital in the city.
xu hopes the university will make good use of its academic strength in the medical field and support shenzhen in developing high-end medical technologies. luo said the new hospital is under construction and the recruitment of the hospital's doctors and president is under way.
the first affiliated hospital of sun yat-sen university, originally known as the affiliated hospital of the guangdong public institution of medicine, was founded in 1910 by dr. paul jerome todd, an american medical missionary, with 40 western doctors.
there will be 12 first-class hospitals to be constructed in shenzhen during the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020), and an estimated 60,000 beds will be available citywide by 2020. ten of these hospitals will be located in four new areas and longgang and bao'an districts. construction of two hospitals in pingshan and guangming new areas will be completed within this year at the soonest.
ten subdistrict hospitals, such as shajing people's hospital, songgang people's hospital, henggang people's hospital and buji people's hospital, will be rebuilt or expanded by december 2018, according to the report.
